This workshop examines the vital need for Know Your Rights education and safety strategies within Sikh-Punjabi communities. This workshop—developed by Umeed—addresses the importance of understanding constitutional rights and practical steps to take during interactions with law enforcement and immigration officials.

This presentation outlines key constitutional rights, focusing on the 4th and 5th Amendments, and provides clear guidance on how to assert those rights. Real-world scenarios and safety planning for families, including specific guidance for children, are discussed. The workshop emphasizes cultural context, communication strategies, and available resources to support community members.

Ideal for community leaders, service providers, and individuals seeking to empower and protect Sikh-Punjabi communities through knowledge and culturally informed support.

Defending Families, Building Futures: South Asian-Specific Strategies in Family Defense

Presented at the SOAR 2025 Summit, this workshop—led by Umeed-Hope in collaboration with the South Asian Legal Defense Fund—examines the growing threats of family separation facing South Asian immigrant families in the U.S. With rising immigration enforcement, child welfare surveillance, and systemic biases, families are increasingly vulnerable to unjust interventions.

This presentation outlines culturally specific family defense strategies, legal advocacy approaches, and rapid-response models that center dignity, language access, and holistic care. Real-world case studies highlight the impact of language barriers, over-policing, and cultural misunderstandings, while actionable solutions are provided for social workers, legal advocates, and community-based organizations.

Ideal for service providers, legal professionals, and community leaders working at the intersection of immigration, family defense, and gender-based violence.
